Malware - 'Green Winick' Notice to Appear in Court Email

Brief Analysis The email is not from Green Winick or any legitimate legal entity. The link in the email opens a webpage that harbours malware. The email is similar to an earlier campaign that also claimed that recipients must appear in court and contained malware in an attached file. If you receive one of these messages, do not click any links or open any attachments that it contains. Green Winick Notice Malware Detailed Analysis 'Notice to Appear in Court' Email Claims to be from Green Winick Inboxes around the world are currently being hit by an email purporting to be from 'Green Winick Attorneys at Law'. The email claims that you are required to appear in court and should therefore click a link to download the court notice and 'read it thoroughly'. The message warns that, if you fail to appear as requested, the judge may hear the case in your absence. Email is not from Green Winick - Link Points to Malware However, the email is not from Green Winick or any legitimate legal firm. Instead, it is a criminal ruse designed to trick you into installing malware on your computer. If you click the link in the email, you will be taken to a website that harbours a version of the notorious Asprox/Kulouz malware. Once downloaded and installed, the malware attempts to download further malware and allows criminals to maintain control of the infected computer and join it to a botnet. Similar to Earlier 'Notice to Appear' Malware Campaign This campaign is very similar to an earlier - and still ongoing - malware campaign that also falsely claimed that recipients were required to appear in court. The earlier versions were supposedly signed by the 'Clerk to the Court'. Alternative variants named other law firms as the supposed senders. Earlier variants harboured the malware payload in attached files. Courts or law firms are very unlikely to send unsolicited emails demanding that recipients appear in court.
