China Detains State Department Official
trunews.com
Chinese officials have detained a Voice of America Mandarin reporter—an employee of the State Department—after he interviewed a man who had been hauled off in the midst of a live television interview two weeks ago.
Monday evening, VOA Mandarin Correspondent Feng Yibing and a contractor, Allen Ai, were taken into custody for at least six hours. Following his release, Feng did an interview with his employer, which is an organization under the auspices of the State Department, in which he described his detention.
He reportedly wrote an email to his editor after his release that stated:
“I was just released from the hands of secret police in Jinan, with all my cell phones destroyed by them. They separated Allen from me during these hours.”
Feng and Ai had just interviewed university professor Sun Wenguang, who had been taken into the custody in the midst of a televised interview earlier this month. During the interview, which occurred through a closed door, men later identified as “contract security guards” attempted to interrupt; these same men to Feng and Ai into custody afterward.
The two men were taken in separate vehicles and appear to have been taken to different locales on the university campus before they were freed. In response, VOA Director Amanda Bennett stated:
“It is outrageous that two journalists have been detained for nothing more than doing their jobs. It’s the job of journalist to find out what’s going on, to talk to people in the news, and that is all that they were doing.”
“This is not the first time” VOA has had “some issues” with the Chinese government and its journalists.
