A 69-year-old man survived on rations of canned goods and melted snow for a week after his pickup truck broke down on a gravel highway in Nevada.
Philip Besanson was traveling from Arizona to his home in Eugene, Oregon, when his car broke down on the partially snow-covered SR 34 highway 50 miles north of Gerlach on February 5.
Besanson stayed in his vehicle, rationed his limited supply of canned goods and melted snow for water until he was finally saved by Washoe County Patrol Lieutenant Phil Condon and Sergeant Dennis Hippert at about 10am on Friday.
He said he was preparing to die in his car when the Sheriff's vehicle arrived on scene, according to a press release posted by the Washoe County Sheriff's Office.
